Seizures and Epilepsy Treatment

An Alternative Treatment Method for Seizures and Epilepsy

What are Seizures and Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a common neurological condition that results in episodic and uncontrollable seizures. However, epilepsy is not the sole cause of seizures, which often have unknown causes and can occur in patients without epilepsy. One possible cause of seizures that should be considered is a misalignment in the upper cervical spine.

Signs and Symptoms of Seizures and Epilepsy

Epilepsy and seizures are characterized by episodes of intense and uncontrollable bodily convulsions. These convulsions are usually accompanied by jerking, flailing, dizziness, confusion, frothing at the mouth, loss of awareness, and concurrent emotional or neurological events.

How the Upper Cervical Spine Affects Seizures and Epilepsy

The occurrence of epilepsy and seizures comes down to neurological miscommunication, but there is a common biomechanical connection between these conditions and the upper cervical spine. Because of its proximity to the brainstem, the upper cervical spine plays a key role in supporting neural pathways along the spinal cord and central nervous system (CNS).

If there is a misalignment in the upper cervical spine, the affected vertebrae could be compressing delicate nerves around the spinal column. Over time, this compression can inflame or pinch the nerve, resulting in disruption or inhibition of the electrical signals being fired from that nerve. This can have a direct knock-on effect on coordination, sensory information, and muscle control, worsening seizure frequency and severity.

How Our Treatment Works for Seizures and Epilepsy

Living with seizures or epilepsy can drastically impact the quality of your everyday life. While there is no cure for epilepsy, there are ways you can reduce the frequency of your episodes. Our specialist Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractor, Dr. Gordon Elder, uses the Blair technique to restore the upper cervical spine to its natural alignment.

To treat seizures, Dr. Elder employs a two-step diagnosis and treatment approach. Initially, patients will attend a 25-to-30-minute consultation; this will give Dr. Elder the opportunity to gather information about their condition and any relevant medical history. The diagnostic process to determine the exact location of any spinal misalignments will involve the use of advanced 3-D imaging technologies alongside traditional observation techniques.

Once your condition has been diagnosed, Dr. Elder will present a comprehensive treatment plan. During this time, you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions or voice any concerns you may have over your treatment. For your treatment, Dr. Elder will use a variety of gentle spinal corrections to coax the vertebrae back into alignment. By removing any pressure or impedances impacting the CNS, electrical signals will begin to resume normal function. Over time, this will reduce the frequency and/or severity of seizures.

To ensure that your adjustment is taking hold, it’s recommended to return for regular check-ups (for at least 3-5 months). Most patients average between 10 and 15 appointments with Dr. Elder to achieve long-lasting/permanent results.
